Docs / Nebula Sound System manual / 1. Install and start
1. Install and start
| Platform | How |
|---|---|
| Windows | Run Nebula-<version>-setup.exe. It installs for the current user (no administrator prompt), adds a Start Menu entry, and appears in "Apps & features" so you can uninstall it. Or unpack the portable zip and double-click nebula.exe. |
| Linux | sudo dpkg -i Nebula-<version>-linux-x64.deb — it installs to /opt/nebula, adds a nebula command and a menu entry. Or unpack the .tar.gz anywhere and run ./nebula.sh. |
| macOS | A build script exists but has never been tested — there is no Mac in this project's toolchain, and MIDI keyboards are not supported there yet. Treat macOS as unverified. |
Where your files live
- Windows:
%APPDATA%\Nebula(settings, projects, samples, exports, logs). - Linux:
~/.local/share/Nebula(or~/.configfor settings, depending on the desktop). - Pass
--data-dir <folder>to keep everything in one folder instead — handy for a USB stick or for testing with a clean slate.
Before you press a key: turn your volume down. The instruments are loud and the app opens the sound card at startup.
